Can Marquès Contemporary

Every year, Can Marquès invites a selection of international contemporary and emerging artists to produce site specific projects which link their practice with the house's unique architecture and history.

Some of these works are incorporated into Can Marquès' contemporary art collection.

Nativity Scenes for the 21st Century
December - January

The Nativity Scene, often referred to as Belen, Nacimiento or Pesebre in Spanish-speaking territories, are two or three dimensional scenes depicting the moment in which the newly born Jesus of Nazareth lies in a manger, and receives visits from the Three Wise Men (Los Reyes Magos) in Bethlehem. At Christmas time, these scenes are created and displayed in Catholic homes, and churches.
Each year, Can Marquès celebrates this tradition, by commissioning an artist to create a contemporary interpretation of the Nativity Scene.

Absence of the Present
September - November

A bianual project connecting future generations with our past.
This project aims to look beyond the artistic practices which are currently on show in contemporary art galleries, biennales and art fairs, in order to concentrate on the thematic preoccupations, artistic discourse and visual-acoustic languages of a new generation of artists which are emerging onto the international art scene, influencing and giving shape to "contemporary art of the future".
The exhibition is a rare opportunity to become familiar with a new generation of artists in the making.
